Claudio Bassetti received his MD degree from the University of Basel in 1984. He trained in neurology in Bern and Lausanne (FMH certification in 1992), and performed research fellowships in basic neurophysiology (Basel, 1985-1986) and sleep medicine (Ann Arbor-Michigan, USA, 1995-6). In 1997 he became associate professor at the University of Bern.
In 2000 he was appointed professor of neurology at the university of Zurich and director of the neurological outpatient clinics of the university hospital. In 2009 he founded the Neurocenter of Southern Switzerland which he directed until 2012.
Claudio Bassetti has authored eight books and over 480 scientific publications (CI 19’220; H-index 78).
His research interests include sleep, stroke, and movement disorders with a translational (human and animal) approach. He served as president of the European Neurological Society (ENS, 2013-4), European Sleep Research Society (ESRS, 2008-12) and Swiss Neurological Society (SNG, 2008-12). He was the founder and first president of the Swiss Federation of Clinical Neurosocieties (SFCNS, 2009-13).
Currently he is board member of the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences (SAMW), president of the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) and president of the the European Narcolepsy Network (EU-NN).
Claudio Bassetti received the M. Aldrich Award in 2008 and the Pisa Sleep Award in 2010.
Winfried J. Randerath graduated from Heinrich Heine University, Düsseldorf, Germany and became a specialist registrar in internal medicine, pneumology and sleep medicine.
He qualified as a professor with a thesis on “Selfadjusting, Automatic CPAP Therapy Based on Impedance” (University Witten/Herdecke). Since October 2003 he is medical director of the Bethanien Hospital, Solingen, Germany, a Clinic specialised on Pneumology, Sleep Medicine and Pulmonary Intensive Care.
He is also the director of the Institute for Pneumology at the University of Cologne, Germany.
He serves as a board member of the German Society for Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine, chairs the local sleep society, is a member of the scientific committee of the German Society of Pneumology (DGP). On a European base he chairs Group 4.02 Sleep and Control of Breathing at the European Respiratory Society.
He has been/is the head of ERS-task forces on “Sleep and Stroke”, “Definition, discrimination, diagnosis, and treatment of central breathing disturbances during sleep”, “Non-CPAP Therapy in Obstructive Sleep Apnoea”, “Pathophysiology, Diagnosis and Treatment of Central Sleep Apnoea”.
The main research activities focus actually on differentiation of obstructive and central sleep apnoea, interaction of sleep apnoea and the heart, pulmonary intensive care and chronic respiratory failure.
Luigi Ferini-Strambi earned his degree in medicine at the State University in Milan, Italy and he completed a fellowship in the Sleep Disorders Center at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, USA in 1983. He earned his Postgraduate Degree in Neurology at the State University in Milan, Italy in 1984.
He is currently Full Professor of Neurology at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University , Milan, Italy. Professor Ferini-Strambi is the Chair of the Dept. of Neurology, Scientific Institute H San Raffaele-Turro, Milan and the Director of the Sleep Disorders Centre.
He is the Field Editor of “Sleep Medicine” journal, Associate Editor of “Journal of Alzheimer’s disease” and Member of the Editorial Board of “Journal of Neurology”, and “Behavioral Neurology”.
He is frequent reviewer for “Neurology”, “Sleep”, “Journal of Sleep Research”, “Journal of Neurology”, “Brain”, “Lancet Neurology”.
Professor Ferini-Strambi is Past-President of the Italian Association of Sleep Medicine and Past-Secretary of the International RBD Study Group.
He is the Past-President of the World Association of Sleep Medicine Society.
He has published more than 300 full papers in International Journals, on various neurological topics (Scopus H-index: 71). The main researches of Professor Ferini-Strambi are on the field of sleep-related movement disorders, REM sleep behavior disorder, neurodegenerative disorders, insomnia and sleep apnea.
Dr. Manconi is a neurologist and Head of the Sleep Center at the Neurocenter of Southern Switzerland in Lugano.
Titular Professor in Neurology at Bern University and at the Università della Svizzera Italiana.
Co-Director of the post-doc Master in Sleep, Consciousness and related Disorders (UniBern-USI). He earned his medical degree at the University of Bologna (Italy), completed his residence in Neurology at the University of Ferrara (Italy) and defended his PhD in Sleep Medicine at the University of Bologna. For 9 years he served as clinical researcher at the Sleep Center of the Scientific Institute of San Raffaele, Milan (Italy).
Visiting Professor at the “Circadian Rodent Lab” at Wisconsin Medical College, Milwaukee (WI, USA) for 1 year, where he was awarded with the “Excellent in Sleep Research Award 2006” for his innovative and leading research activity in developing a pharmacogenetic rodent model for Restless Legs Syndrome.
He is currently involved in clinical and basic research in sleep field, with particular interest in sleep related motor disorders and his lab obtained recently the certification as center of excellence in restless legs syndrome by the international RLS Foundation.
He published over 150 scientific articles and 2 books and is member of various International Sleep Societies.
DIRECTOR
He graduated in medicine at the University of Zurich where he received the MD in 1983.
In 1988 he achieved the Swiss Board Certifications (FMH) in Prevention and Public Health followed by a Master degree in Public Health at the Medical School, University of Geneva (1993) Initiating his professional carrier as attending doctor (1983), from 1984 to 1985 he has been in charge with a research project promoted by World Health Organization (OMS/WHO) called Monica – Ticino, regarding the cardiovascular risk factors.
From 1985 to 1993 he has been nominated as Assistant Cantonal Medical Officer in the Social and Health Department of Ticino Canton.
From 1985 to 2017 (August) he has been the Chief Medical Officer of the Medical Area.
From September 2017 he is the Chief of the EOC Academic Education, Research and Innovation Area (AFRI). He is member of the General Direction of the Cantonal Hospital Institution (EOC), Ticino Canton, and also Chair of the Scientific Research Advisory Board.
