|
|
Dear readers,
ESF is dedicated to promoting knowledge, training, and advanced education in the field of sleep, consciousness and related disorders, contributing to scientific research, and improving patient care. In accordance with these purposes, ESF organizes and supports several activities. The latest events held were as follows: -
Sleep Medicine Summer School: 3rd edition in a hybrid format (Lugano, July 10-14, 2023)
- Sleep Science Winter School: 4th edition in virtual format (March 3-4, 2022)
- Think Tank: a specialized scientific event, that explores a specific topic in-depth
- World Sleep Forum, 6th Think Tank on Hypersomnolence and Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (Baveno, October 14-15, 2022) - Narcolepsy events:
- 8th Swiss Narcolepsy Day (Basel, February 2, 2023); - 20th European Narcolepsy Master Class (Leiden, November 10, 2023);
- 14th European Narcolepsy Days (Leiden, November 11-12, 2023)
ESF also collaborates with academic institutions for continuing education opportunities. Together with the Academy of Sleep and Consciousness (ASC), national and international partner Universities, the International Master in Sleep Medicine was again launched in May 2023. This unique postgraduate program begins every two years, and the next enrollment is planned for Spring 2025.
For a brief overview of other exciting news and innovations of ESF throughout 2023, these are the highlights: (1) the inclusion of the new Young Section board members, making up a diverse, enthusiastic, and committed group; (2) the change in the newsletter structure: now more engaging and informative, the newsletter includes articles and interviews with regular updates on interesting sleep topics; (3) the launch of the LinkedIn account and the creation of the WhatsApp group for young members, to open up new possibilities for promoting information and communication networks; and (4) the beginning of the application process for ESF Young Section members (online application).
Furthermore, ESF is planning several other major national and international initiatives for 2024, which will be announced in due time. The prominent Congresses and Meetings already confirmed for 2024 are presented below.
Stay connected throughout the year and wait for the news!
Best regards and Merry Christmas!

Sleeping from Singapore to Rio de Janeiro to Europe: three months, three continents, three studies presented |
|
|
September, October, and November 2023 have been fascinating for my sleep research career. I had the opportunity to present three of my works at three international conferences and meet exceptional researchers worldwide.
In September, I had the pleasure to present my work "Transferability of a Sensing Mattress for Posture Classification from Research into Clinics" at the International Conference on Rehabilitation Robotics (ICORR), Singapore, Singapore, 2023, pp. 1-6, doi: 10.1109/ICORR58425.2023.10304684.
ICORR was part of the RehabWeek, where almost 1000 people from all around the world participated. Advances in rehabilitation science, technology, and clinical practice are changing many patients' lives and helping them reintegrate into our society. RehabWeek 2023 aims to cover inspiring innovations in neurorehabilitation and their societal impacts. Singapore was a great experience also because of the fascinating city with the lights at the Garden by the Bay, the luxurious hotel with rooftop infinity pool Marina Bay, and the delicious street food from the Howkers.
In October, I was honored to present my work "Sleep Stage Classification with a Network of Wearable and Nearable Devices" at the World Sleep Congress (WSC) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. With this research, I could receive the New Investigator Award, besides 17 other young researchers out of thousands of applicants. Together with the travel award from the Department of Biomedical Research of the University of Bern, I could collect 1000$ + 1000CHF to attend the great conference in Brazil. WSC is the largest conference about sleep research, with over 3100 attendees from 73 countries. Rio de Janeiro was a perfect location for the meeting, allowing attendees to explore the immense city from the seaside with the large clear sand beaches to the mountains and spectacular nature on the other side. Everything is together with the city's impressive landmarks like the Crist Redentor and the Sugarloaf Mountain. We could also catch the typical Brazilian food and drinks, like Picanha and Agua de Coco.

Last but not least, in November, I had the pleasure to present the work "SPHYNCS: Long-term monitoring with smartwatches in central disorders of hypersomnolence and extraction of digital biomarkers in narcolepsy" at the European Narcolepsy Days in Leiden, the Netherlands organized by the European Narcolepsy Network (EU-NN). The European Narcolepsy Days is a joint meeting with patients and includes clinical and scientific sessions on narcolepsy and its treatment, lectures on the most recent publications in the field of narcolepsy, pediatric updates, short presentations by young investigators on current research projects, a poster session and a keynote lecture on clinical, pathophysiological and therapeutic aspects of narcolepsy and its socio-economic impact. The representatives of national patient organizations hosted a joint workshop with clinicians and a second session in which questions prepared by patients were discussed with physicians and scientists. It was an excellent opportunity to have the possibility of giving an oral presentation in front of the most expert researcher in the field of narcolepsy.

Master of Advanced Studies in Sleep Medicine |
|
|
The Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Sleep Medicine offers a unique program that provides advanced medical and scientific insights into sleep-wake physiology, chronobiology and sleep medicine. The program was created in 2017 by the University of Bern and the Università della Svizzera Italiana and in close collaboration with the Inselspital (University Hospital) in Bern and the Ospedale Regionale in Lugano (in Ticino/Southern Switzerland), as well as 13 international partner Universities. It is directed by Prof. Claudio Bassetti, co-directed by Prof. Antoine Adamantidis, Prof. Mauro Manconi and Prof. Kaspar Schindler, and coordinated by Felicitas Sohm.
The postgraduate master is a part-time course over 2½ years which targets health professionals, scientists and technicians. The course is an online program built on modules in basic, advanced and specialized knowledge. The 12 modules include online lectures, in-person sleep schools, internships in a sleep center (at one of our 13 partner Universities), case discussions and interactive sessions with students and top-experts from across the world, and culminate with a master thesis. The program covers sleep-wake-circadian biology, disturbances of consciousness and sleep-related disorders. Novel approaches in sleep medicine (e.g. clinical trials, telemedicine, data science, artificial intelligence) as well as topics of increasing relevance (e.g. gender and diversity, sleep health, professional and societal implications) are presented.
The students gain state-of the art knowledge, skills and professional experiences to prepare or promote a clinical or scientific career in sleep medicine. In June 2023 the MAS started for the 3rd time with 22 students from 14 different countries. The next enrollment to the program is planned in Spring 2025.
In addition to the full MAS program, a Crash Course is offered to acquire basic knowledge in sleep medicine in a short period and prepare candidate to the board certification examinations (e.g., ESRS, World Sleep). The Crash Course is part of the MAS in Sleep Medicine and can be booked as a single module to get access to a summary of approx. 30 online lectures and online Q&A sessions with experts. The course covers important subjects like basics of sleep, central disorders of hypersomnolence, chronobiology, clinical assessment, insomnia, parasomnias, pediatrics, scoring, sleep related breathing and movement disorders.
