Dear Readers,
It gives us great pleasure to welcome you to the 11th issue of our Bulletin. We are happy to update you. s.
Earlier this year, an online meeting was organized to introduce ESF activities for the new young members
- Master in Sleep Medicine
The majority of new young members (70%) are interested in attending the Master, which will take place in spring 2025. - Meet-the-expert webinars
In order of interest are the following topics for webinars: study design, statistics, scientific writing, and literature research. -
Personal Tutoring
40% of new young members are interested, and 20% are very interested in personal tutoring programs. - Group Mentorship
50% of new young members are interested, and 30% are very interested in mentorship. The topics they would attend are research (30%), clinical field (30%), getting publication guidance (10%), and all of them (30%). - Social Media (LinkedIn, WhatsApp) Community ESF Young Section
50% of new young members are interested in being part of it. - Other proposed activities
a. Online meetings on important topics in sleep medicine or case discussion. b. Some closed meetings among small groups to discuss research data and study methodology, giving some feedback about ongoing works. -
Online meetings/webinars
The best days and times to connect are Monday, 15:00-16:00, and Wednesday, 15:00-16:00 CEST. however, all our young members prefer to view the recorded meetings when they have time and have the possibility of submitting questions that the experts may reply to at their convenience.
We would like to thank all our new young members for replying to the survey and joining our journey ahead. The next step is to share the survey results with the ESF Board and collimate with their views.
If you are interested in becoming part of our community, or if you would like to suggest your young fellow to join, please register via our online application.
Finally, we are delighted to announce a new section of the Newsletter, “Paper of the Month”, in which we aim to present a summary of a published sleep study and an interview with the first author. In this issue, we invite you to join Adriano’s highly interesting point of view. At the same time, check what Oriella is doing, whilst this month spotlight is on Xiaoli.
We hope you’ll enjoy the contents of this issue.
Enjoy the summer and we’ll be back in September with further good news ! The editorial team! |

Paper of the month "The Microbiota–Gut–Brain Axis in Metabolic Syndrome and Sleep Disorders: A Systematic Review" |
| |
Adriano dos Santos
Integrative Medicine Nutrition Department, ADS Vitality B.V., The Hague, The Netherlands |

|
Over recent decades, a growing body of evidence has emerged linking the composition of the gut microbiota to sleep regulation. The role of the gut–brain axis as the main communicating pathway between gut microbiota and sleep regulation pathways in the brain reveals some common host–microbial biomarkers in both sleep disturbances and metabolic syndrome. The biological mechanisms behind this complex interaction between neuroendocrine, immune, and metabolic pathways are not fully understood yet. The present systematic review describes common microbial features between gut microbiota and metabolic syndrome and sleep disorders based on 36 articles. The authors pay attention to studies evaluating the effect of dietary patterns, dietary supplementation, and probiotics on metabolic syndrome or sleep disturbances. Based on the analysis, they conclude that
Dietary choices promote microbial composition and metabolites, causing both the amelioration and impairment of metabolic syndrome and sleep homeostasis

Sleep robotics in ICRA 2024 Yokohama, Japan |
|
|
Dr. sc. ETH Oriella Gnarra |
We are thrilled to share the exciting achievements and experiences from the recent ICRA international conference on robotics and automation, held in May 2024 in Yokohama, Japan. This year, through the remarkable collaboration between two ETH Zurich laboratories—the SMS Lab and the SCAI Lab—and the SRD Lab from Tohoku University and NCGG, our team showcased an innovative project that captured the imagination and interest of thousands of attendees.
A Fusion of Technology and Art
This project resulted from extensive collaboration and integration of advanced robotics with artistic elements, creating an immersive and relaxing environment for the visitors. To enhance the experience, we collaborated with talented Japanese artists like Basil Kräher to transform our booth into a serene bedroom-like setting. The robotic bed gently rocked visitors, providing a calming and relaxing experience. An immersive array of audio-visual effects complemented this physical sensation.
Immersive Audio-Visual Experience Visitors were enveloped in a sensory journey with projections of sand and sleep-deity-themed imagery on a circular screen mounted on the ceiling. The ambiance was further enriched by meticulously programmed LED lighting and a fog machine, creating a unique and soothing atmosphere.
Attracting a Diverse Audience
The innovative combination of robotics and artistic design attracted a diverse audience, including researchers, renowned professors, media, and investors. The booth became a focal point of the conference, drawing hundreds of curious and intrigued visitors.
Gratitude for Collaboration
This remarkable showcase would not have been possible without our partnering laboratories' dedicated collaboration and our talented artists' support. We are excited about the future possibilities this project has opened and look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts to push the boundaries of technological innovation and artistic expression.
Stay tuned for more updates and innovations from our team! |
