In 2018 the first cohort of students of the Academy of Sleep and Consciousness (ASC) met in Bern, Switzerland to kick off the CAS in Sleep, Consciousness and Related Disorders. At the beginning of July 2021, as the second cohort started with the program, everything was a little different. But before we look at what is happening in the present, let us take a look back.
In memory of In memory of Lev Mukhametov (1931-2021) Sleep in marine mammals species
A Russian biologist Lev Mukhametov (19.05.1938 - 18.06.2021) had worked most of his life at the Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences and had devoted a lot of his activities to investigating sleep in marine animals. In 1970s, L. Mukhametov leading a group of colleagues and collaborators discovered a phenomenon of unihemispheric slow wave sleep in dolphins. Unihemispheric slow-wave sleep appears alternatively in both hemispheres and is the dominant type of natural sleep in dolphins. In captivity, sleep is predominantly registered during night and second half of the day (Neurofiziologia, 1988). By recording EEG, EMG and eye movements, Lev Mukhametov could not demonstrate typical REM-sleep features in freely moving dolphins... The World Sleep Forum - 5th Think Tank originally scheduled in Ascona was held online due to the COVID19 pandemic. In this interview with Simon Herkenrath from Bethanien Hospital in Solingen, Germany, several aspects of obesity-related hypoventilation are discussed. Simon talks about diagnosis and classification of breathing disorders in obesity. Furthermore, some important pathophysiological players involved in the development of chronic hypercapnic ventilatory insufficiency are highlighted and Simon comments on a reasonable diagnostic approach for hypoventilation in obesity. The 18th European Narcolepsy Masterclass is an half day symposium with participants from all over Europe. All aspects of narcolepsy will be covered: epidemiology, neuroanatomy and biology of sleep and wake, etiopathology, symptomatology and treatment. Furthermore there will be industry sessions. The 12th European Narcolepsy Days – Towards an individualized therapy which immediately follows the 18th European Narcolepsy MasterClass, is a joint meeting with patients and includes clinical and scientific sessions on narcolepsy and its treatment, lectures on the most recent publications in the field of narcolepsy, pediatric updates, short presentations by young investigators on current research projects, a poster session and a keynote lecture on clinical, pathophysiological and therapeutic aspects of narcolepsy and its socio-economic impact.
